University of Michigan Pound House Children’s Center
has merged with the Children's Center for Working Families to become the Towsley Children's House. During construction of the new Towsley Children's House, the Center will be located at the Pfizer child care facility on Plymouth Road.
Program Overview
The Pound House Children's Center has been providing high quality education and care for 2½ to 5-year-old children since 1976. The limited class size, along with student-staff involvement, gives children a special educational environment that allows for individualization and a variety of activities.
The developmentally appropriate program includes a balance of child and teacher initiated activities built into a well-defined daily routine. The play-based curriculum is ever evolving and adapting to meet the needs and interests of the children. The program provides an adult-child ratio of 1:4. Classroom activities are organized thematically so that children may learn through many modalities, and find excitement and stimulation in the many varied experiences provided daily.
The worlds of young children in this age group are expanding from home to community. We support this exploration with field trips to nearby stores, parks, museums, as well as farms and zoos. Additional enriching experiences are periodically planned at the Center. The facility is equipped with a gross-motor development room and outside playground, used daily as weather permits.
The program operates on the University academic calendar from September through June. An optional program is available during the summer semester.
